5 Reasons First Aid Should Be Taught in Schools

When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis ten years ago, I struggled to come to terms with the diagnosis and what it meant for my future. I started this blog to connect with and encourage others living with this condition. I share my personal journey and blog about the lifestyle changes I have made and alternative treatments I have tried over the years, including herbal medicine, acupuncture and homeopathy. You'll also find posts about new treatments that are becoming available and products, such as mobility aids and adapted kitchen utensils, I've tried. I hope you enjoy my blog and find it useful.

Have you ever wondered why first aid isn't commonly taught in schools? There's no simple answer, and it's an issue that's raised frequently.

While arranging first aid courses can take a small amount of time away from regular lessons, it's an important skill that provides benefits to teachers, pupils and society.

Keep reading for five reasons first aid should definitely be taught in schools.

1. It Could Save Lives

It's an obvious one, but it's also extremely important. In life or death situations, a pupil who's been trained in first aid could be the person to save a life - particularly if they're in a remote area that's difficult for emergency services to travel to.

Young people are completely capable of acting rationally in crisis situations like this, as long as they've had the correct training.

2. Students Are Eager to Learn

Most students are keen to learn practical skills, like first aid, but they simply aren't given the opportunity. When educators make the effort to arrange first aid courses for their pupils, it's a good sign that they're able to listen and respond to the suggestions of their pupils.

Since first aid is such an essential skill, pupils are likely to be engaged and attentive during courses.

3. First Aid Courses Increase Confidence

It's hard for kids to feel confident in difficult situations if they haven't been properly prepared. Taking a first aid course means that pupils will be more likely to respond calmly and sensibly when a family member or friend suffers from a medical emergency.

They'll feel confident and empowered to help, rather than panicking and making the situation worse. Confidence is key when it comes to saving lives.

4. Treating Pupils Like Adults Improves Behaviour

When pupils are given access to first aid training, it's a sign that they're being respected as adults. This kind of gesture can make a big difference to the behaviour of pupils.

When students are treated like mature adults, they're much more likely to behave that way.

5. First Aid Ties into Other Lessons

First aid is relevant to classes like science, religious education, and physical education, so can easily be tied into other aspects of the curriculum. This means that it will be supplementing pupils' other classes, rather than taking time away from them.
